LOCAL COMMANDER / OPEN SOURCE

Open-source edition

A free, MIT-licensed MCP server that gives your AI client controlled access to one computer. It runs next to the AI client that starts it and needs no account.

MIT license Updated

At a glance

  • Free and MIT licensed, with the source on GitHub.
  • One computer, inside the folders you choose.
  • No Local Commander account, and no connection to localcmd.app.
  • The hosted Local Commander service is a separate product. The difference is below.

What it does

Your AI client starts the server on your computer and talks to it over stdio, or you run it in Docker. The server gives the client tools to:

  • read, search and edit files inside the folders you choose;
  • see Git status, changes and history;
  • run developer commands from an allowlist, such as git, node, npm and python, with separate arguments;
  • start long-running dev processes and read their output;
  • send HTTP requests to services on localhost.

Secret files such as .env and private keys are blocked by default. The server sends no telemetry. It is not a sandbox: an allowed program runs with your account's permissions. For stronger isolation, use the Docker image or a separate account.

Install

  • Claude Desktop: download the .mcpb file from the latest release, open it in Claude Desktop and choose your folders. No Node.js needed.
  • Claude Desktop or Cursor, with Node.js 20 or later: run npx -y local-commander-mcp-agent setup --root /path/to/your/projects --client all, then restart the app.
  • Any other MCP client: start npx -y local-commander-mcp-agent --stdio /path/to/your/projects.
  • Docker: mount your projects into ghcr.io/netbka/local-commander-mcp-agent, for example docker run -i --rm -v /path/to/your/projects:/workspace/projects ghcr.io/netbka/local-commander-mcp-agent.

The edition is also listed in the MCP Registry as io.github.netbka/local-commander-mcp-agent. The README covers configuration, the tool list and the security model.

Open source or hosted

These are two separate products. Neither needs the other.

  • Open-source edition: one computer. Your AI client starts the server on that computer. It works inside the folders you choose and runs commands from its allowlist. No account. Support through GitHub issues.
  • Hosted Local Commander service: ChatGPT, Claude or any MCP client connects to localcmd.app/mcp. It reaches Windows 11 computers that run the Local Commander agent (npx local-commander-agent@latest) and are paired with your account, including several computers at once. You choose full access to your Windows account or only the folders you pick. It has Free and Team pack plans. Start from the home page; support is on the support page.
