LOCAL COMMANDER / GUIDE

How to control multiple computers with AI

Install the Local Commander agent on each computer, connect ChatGPT, Claude or another AI app to localcmd.app/mcp, and ask in one chat. Your AI can then read files, run commands and use Git on any of those computers, and you see which computer ran what. It works on Windows, macOS and Linux, and it is free for up to 5 computers.

Updated

At a glance

  • One AI chat, several computers: work PC, home PC, servers, a relative's computer.
  • Works with ChatGPT, Claude, Cursor and any app that supports remote MCP with sign-in.
  • No code. Install, approve, choose access, connect your AI.
  • Free for up to 5 computers.

What it looks like

You type one request. Each computer does its part.

  • “Check disk space, memory and failed services on all my servers and tell me which one needs attention.”
  • “On Work PC, review my latest task notes and prepare a defect report.”
  • “On Grandma's PC, check why her VPN won't connect and help me fix it.”
  • “Update the pricing text on our site, deploy it and check the live page.”

Independent tasks run side by side. Work on the same folder waits its turn. If a computer drops in the middle of a task, the work is not re-run on a guess; it waits for you to check.

Set it up in four steps

  1. Install. On each computer, run npx local-commander-agent@latest.
  2. Approve. Confirm the pairing in your browser.
  3. Choose access. Your whole user account, or only the folders you pick.
  4. Connect your AI. Add localcmd.app/mcp as a remote MCP server in ChatGPT, Claude, Cursor or another app, and sign in with your Local Commander account.

The list of AI apps on the home page links to the setup steps for each one.

Ways to control several computers with AI

There are several approaches. They suit different jobs.

ApproachWhat setup takesBest for
Local CommanderA few minutes per computer, no codeEveryday tasks on your own PCs and servers from ChatGPT, Claude or another AI chat
Your own agent on a computer-use APIYou write and host the codeCustom automation that works through the screen
AI-written scripts with Ansible or SSHA central server, an inventory and scriptingRepeatable admin jobs across many servers
AI inside a remote monitoring and management toolThe vendor's agent and a contractPatching and support for a company fleet
Cloud agentsNothing to installWeb tasks that don't need files on your computers

When something else fits better

  • Tasks that only work through the screen, such as clicking through an app with no command line. Remote desktop or a computer-use tool is the right choice.
  • One computer and one AI app. That app's own computer features may be simpler.
  • A managed company fleet with patching and compliance. A remote monitoring and management product covers that; Local Commander does not replace it.

What your AI can and can't touch

You choose the access at setup: your whole user account or only the folders you pick. You can block commands, cancel a running task, and revoke a computer or an AI app at any time. Every request shows which computer ran it and how it ended: done, failed or unknown.

It is not a sandbox. Work runs with the permissions of the user account on that computer. For stronger isolation, run the agent under a separate user account.

Questions

Can I control my computers from my phone?
Yes, through any AI app connected to Local Commander. The computer must be awake, online and running the agent.

Do I need to write code?
No. You install the agent, approve it and type requests in the AI chat you already use.

Can I run the same task on all my computers at once?
Yes. Ask for it in one message. The Free plan runs up to 8 tasks at a time across your computers, a Team pack up to 24.

Which systems are supported?
Windows 11 x64, macOS 14 or later on Apple Silicon, and Linux with a systemd user session (Ubuntu 24.04 x64 or arm64), plus Node.js 20 or later.

How much does it cost?
Free for up to 5 computers, with no execution cap. A Team pack is $15 a month and adds 10 computers. Details are in pricing.
